Turning AI into action: What it takes for enterprises to move beyond the prompt

At Microsoft’s offices in Espoo, overlooking a still-wintery Finnish coastline, the conversation around AI felt noticeably different.

This wasn’t about what AI could do. It was about what it actually takes to make it work.

Microsoft AI & Agent Lab: From Prompt to Process, architects, developers and IT leaders came together for a hands-on session focused on a challenge many organizations are now facing: how to move from experimentation to production, turning promising AI use cases into secure, scalable and real enterprise processes.

Across the sessions, one message stood out clearly: AI alone doesn’t create value. Process does.

From experimentation to real systems

Over the past two years, most organizations have explored AI in some form: pilots, proofs of concept, internal tools. The results are often impressive, but also isolated.

The real challenge begins when those experiments need to become part of daily operations.

That means integrating AI into existing systems, ensuring security and compliance and making outcomes reliable and repeatable.

As speaker Matthew Fleming, Head of Business Intelligence & Data at Triton, explained, the focus is on building applications that leverage existing infrastructure and security models and getting them into a platform where they can be rolled out to users.

This shift, from generating outputs to delivering systems, is where many initiatives stall.

The gap between reasoning and execution

One of the most important themes discussed during the event was the gap between what AI is good at, and what enterprises require.

Generative AI can:

  • interpret language

  • reason about information

  • make recommendations

Enterprise environments demand something different:

  • strict business rules

  • auditability

  • controlled execution

As highlighted during Maksim Kogan's Secure Orchestration session:

“Generative AI… are extraordinarily good at reasoning, but they are not, by design, a reliable executer of business rules,” said the Solution Architect at Frends.

 

This mismatch is at the heart of why many AI projects struggle to move beyond experimentation.

Orchestration: the layer that makes AI usable

The solution presented throughout the event was to place AI within a controlled environment.

Instead of allowing AI to directly interact with enterprise systems, organizations need an orchestration layer that:

  • validates inputs before AI acts

  • enforces business rules

  • controls execution

  • logs and audits every step

In this model, AI becomes part of a larger system, not the system itself.

The role of integration and automation platforms is to provide that structure, ensuring that every AI-driven action is secure, governed and aligned with business logic. This is what turns AI from a tool into a capability.

AI inside processes, not outside them

A consistent pattern across the discussions was how AI and automation complement each other when properly combined.

AI is used for what it does best: reading and interpreting unstructured data, classifying and summarizing information and supporting decision-making.

Automation and integration handle validation, routing, execution and system interaction. Maksim shared some real-worl examples based on Frends' AI capabilities supported by the newly released Intelligent AI Connector, which lets AI tasks be embedded directly into workflows.

“AI did what AI is good at… understanding natural language, applying policy reasoning, making a recommendation. Frends did what an enterprise platform is good at… validating against real data, enforcing business rules, managing the human approval workflow, and writing to the system of records.”

This division of responsibilities ensures that AI enhances processes without compromising reliability or control.

It also makes it possible to introduce AI incrementally, embedding it into workflows where it adds the most value.

From prompt to deployed application

One of the most concrete examples of this shift came from Triton, where AI is being used not just to generate outputs, but to build and deploy real applications.

The approach demonstrated how a single prompt can:

  • generate database schemas

  • create API specifications

  • build integration processes

  • deploy applications into a secure enterprise environment

All within a structured setup that leverages existing infrastructure, security models and integration capabilities.

The goal is not just speed, but learning.

“How can we streamline? How can we deliver more, deliver faster, fail faster?,” asked Matthew.

This creates a new development dynamic, where ideas can be tested quickly, successful ones can be scaled and unsuccessful ones can be discarded without heavy investment.

AI, in this context, becomes a way to accelerate experimentation without breaking enterprise standards.

Scaling AI requires more than technology

As the sessions made clear, moving beyond the prompt is not just a technical challenge.

It requires a series of changes, including a shift in mindset. Instead of treating AI as a standalone capability, organizations need to see it as part of a broader architecture, one that combines data,  integration, automation and human decision-making.  Only then can AI move from isolated use cases to scalable impact.

The transition from AI experimentation to production is already underway.  What the AI Lab in Espoo showed is that the answer lies in how those models are connected, controlled and embedded into real processes.

Because in the end, AI doesn’t transform businesses by generating answers.

It does so by becoming part of how work gets done.
