Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto Oy – Building a Future-Proof Integration Architecture for Sustainable Waste Management

Promoting sustainability, circular economy, and improved customer service, PJH is modernizing its core IT infrastructure — and integrations play a pivotal role in this transformation.

Industry: Waste Management
Customer: Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto Oy
Region: Pirkanmaa, Finland

Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto Oy (PJH), a municipally owned waste management company serving over 450,000 residents in the Pirkanmaa region of Finland, has embarked on a major digital transformation journey. As part of their strategic ERP renewal initiative, PJH selected Frends as their integration partner to help future-proof their system architecture and increase operational efficiency.

With a mission to promote sustainability, circular economy principles, and improved customer service, PJH is modernizing its core IT infrastructure — and integrations play a pivotal role in this transformation.

From Legacy Connections to a Scalable Future

PJH is in the middle of replacing the most critical systems in their operation, including transitioning to a new ERP platform provided by WasteHero. This system renewal opened a timely opportunity to reevaluate and redesign their entire integration architecture.

Historically reliant on point-to-point integrations, PJH recognized the limitations of their legacy setup — from scalability issues to lack of agility in rolling out new services. The organization needed an approach that would support current needs while enabling long-term growth and innovation.

An Integration Strategy Built for Resilience and Scale

Frends Integration Platform was selected following evaluation of several options. The key to PJH's decision was Frends' strong track record in the public sector, modern low-code capabilities, and its ability to offer a fast, collaborative start, beginning with designing their architecture.

The collaboration began with joint architectural design work, where Frends helped define a modern, centralized integration architecture tailored to PJH's evolving needs. This approach marked a shift from point-to-point integrations to a more structured and scalable approach.

Importantly, Frends is not just a tool provider — the platform became a puzzle piece in helping PJH align technology with broader strategic objectives like operational efficiency, carbon footprint reduction, and citizen-centric service delivery.

Implementation Highlights

  • ERP Integration: Seamless integration between the new WasteHero ERP and other core systems, supporting data flow across waste collection, customer service, and billing processes.
  • Architecture Design: Co-created a modern integration architecture that supports modularity and reuse, improving scalability and governance.
  • Rapid Onboarding: PJH benefited from Frends’ agile onboarding process and hands-on support, moving quickly from design to environment setup.

Business Impact

  • Operational Efficiency: Reduced manual processes and increased reliability in system communication.
  • Future-Ready Architecture: A scalable foundation that simplifies future system changes or new service integrations.
  • Cost Transparency: Clear pricing structure

What Comes Next: Scaling the Integration Ecosystem

The integration implementation phase is now underway, tightly aligned with the ERP project timeline. PJH and Frends are poised to expand the collaboration into other integration use cases.

With their "integrations first" approach, PJH is paving the way for smarter, greener, and more agile waste management operations in the region.

“This is more than just an IT project — it’s a foundational shift that supports our strategic goals around efficiency, sustainability, and public service excellence. Frends has helped us take a big step toward making that vision a reality.”
