Karlskrona, the capital of Blekinge County in the south of Sweden, entered the European Commission’s 100 Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC) that supports 136 cities in using cutting-edge technologies to lead the intelligent, green and socially responsible recovery. Karlskrona together with its technological partners – Frends iPaaS, Esri's ArcGIS platform, and Abou service platform successfully deployed an E-Government & Digital Public Service solution –Karlskrona Berths & Moorings

For any city by the sea like Karlskrona there is great interest in the municipal moorings. Karlskrona municipality provides approximately 1,900 leisure boat berths at 29 different jetty and harbor facilities. Most places are in central Karlskrona, but also in the outer areas, a berth can be rented.

For this reason, making all information about each berth available has become important to significantly improve overall convenience and city experience. Karlskrona integrated data from different sources to collect a 360 degree and up-to-date information on everything you need to know about municipal moorings:

  • vacancy status;
  • mooring size, like depth, width, and length;
  • boat instructions for mooring;
  • geolocation;
  • a booking system;
  • an integrated payment system.

Frends Integration Platform responded to the challenge to enhance and simplify data sharing practices and promote the strategic use of data for the public sector. The flexibility of APIs and low-code integrations within the Frends platform makes it easy and affordable to create new digital public services. Frends supports the development and hosting of Open Interfaces, complex workflow scheduling, API data integration, intelligent process automation, among many other features. Integrating with Frends contributes to the reduction of the IT burden in the public sector and helps the Public and Private stakeholders to co-create new solutions with APIs to bring an added value to citizens.

We are constantly working to improve our service delivery to our residents. I believe that it is essential to have a process-based approach to develop sustainable solutions that simplify the lives of our residents and visitors, and the Frends platform strengthens our ability in this area, says Carl-Martin Lanér, Municipal Director at Karlskrona Municipality.

By combining Frends Integration platform with ArcGIS, and Abou, Karlskrona developed a map-based interface that makes it easier for the user to handle what concerns the berth management the most, and make an impact by positively contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth.

The ICC is an initiative that supports 136 cities in using advanced technology for intelligent, green and socially responsible recovery. The cities that are part of the ICC act as engines of recovery for their local economy, creating new jobs and strengthening citizens' participation and well-being. The different cities have access to strategic advice from international experts in areas such as the green economy, local green business, the digitization of public administration, digital and green transition in tourism and much more. The ICC is part of a broader support system within the European Union that recognizes the importance of meeting the promises of the European Green Deal, the digital strategy and other EU policies.
